“…For I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”   Exodus 20:5-6

God shows His mercy to mankind when he states that He visits the iniquity of the fathers to the third and fourth generation, BUT He shows His love to a thousand generations of those who love Him.

I have been told that God allows an iniquity (such as alcoholism) to be passed down for only three or four generations, and then it changes to another iniquity (such as anger). If our sins were continued to be passed down through many generations, we would become so wicked that we would annihilate each other.

God stops sin because He loves us. We still have free will, and He honors it. He re-directs the sin for our own good, and protects us from our own evilness.

Those who have studied the Bible have taught the explanation of generational curses –or iniquities – for years. It helps to explain some of the actions and patterns of mankind. It gives us insight to our nature.

I think we often miss the tremendous promise of this verse. God shows love to a THOUSAND generations of those who love and keep His commandments. What a blessing and comfort! Just think – our love for and to God is honored not for just three or four generations, and then it is changed into something else. He allows our sin to grow for three or four generations, and then He changes it to weaken it. But, He shows His love for a THOUSAND generations to those who love and keep His commandments. If evil can grow stronger in three or four generations, think how much stronger God’s love grows over a thousand generations!

If we assume that a generation is 30 years, then God’s love will be passed down for 30,000 years to our descendants! Just because we love Him and keep His commandments. What a gift!!

God rewards, or honors, our love for Him about 250 times more than He allows our iniquity to grow! (My calculations are 1000 generations of God’s love divided by four generations of iniquity.) His love is so much stronger than we can imagine!

I do not have many financial and material possessions to pass down to my family. I have said for years that my heritage to them will be the prayers I have lifted up for them. This promise from Exodus 20:5-6 is a life-impacting revelation for me! Isn’t it wonderful that God is blessing our prayers, faith, and actions to those who are far beyond our comprehension of “family”?

In 30,000 years, how valuable will a million dollar inheritance (today’s value) be to our descendants?  In 30,000 years, how much will our prayers, faith, and striving to keep God’s commandments affect the lives of our continued families?

I am trusting God that He is using my prayers to bless my descendants with faith and close communion with Him. As our world changes, we have the security and promise that God honors our faith and shows His love to our lineage.

What a blessing!
